The best Christmas Eve ever: Local Navy man surprises mom with trip home

A heavy snowfall was swirling in the gray, gloomy air outside the Crawford County jail as Corrections Officer Jennifer Pearson completed her mid-afternoon shift Tuesday.

She anticipated stepping out into the cold, making the long drive home and spending Christmas Eve alone wrapping presents, worrying and probably not sleeping much.

She hadn’t seen son Josh Dennis — who describes his mom as his “best friend” — for months since he joined the Navy, headed off to boot camp and was sent to Florida for technical training. He had promised to make it home sometime Christmas Day, but he was driving straight through — something like 20 hours or more — and now there was this bad weather.

Josh had just texted that he was driving through Georgia, was hungry and wasn’t sure if he should take the time to stop now.

So, with mixed emotions she headed into the staff conference room to end her shift and walked right into the Christmas Eve she’ll never forget.
