Prison Board Rejects Plan to Expand Inmate Sales
By AP
Published: 11/01/2004

The Arkansas Board of Corrections doesn't want to try to earn more money on goods produced by inmates, especially if it infringes on private industry.
The board rejected a plan from prisons director Larry Norris two weeks ago to expand the selling of inmates' products.
Board member Bill Ferren said the program could take away from private industry sales and is tantamount to privatizing prisons for profit.
He said the prison system was better off spending its energy promoting service projects, like having inmates refurbish donated wheelchairs for Third World countries.
The subject came up when Norris was presenting his 10 ideas for bills to the Arkansas Legislature. The board accepted nine of them, but vetoed the prison industry program.
