| State to build new housing units at two existing prisons |

Three new housing units, with a total of 2,376 beds, are to be built at two existing prison sites, the Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation says Thursday. Two 792-bed facilities, a total of 1,584 beds, will be built on state prison land adjacent to Mule Creek State Prison in Ione and a third 792-bed facility will be built on state prison land adjacent to Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. "Construction of these facilities will provide CDCR with flexible housing for inmates with disabilities, as well as intermediate medical or mental health treatment needs," says CDCR Secretary Jeffrey Beard. The additional bed space is expected to help the state comply with federal court orders that have held the overcrowded prisons violate the Constitution. Read More. |
