There were fewer repeat offenders in Santa Cruz County during the first year of the state's prison overhaul, according to a recent report from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Before the prison overhaul, about 70 percent of former prison inmates on probation in Santa Cruz County were arrested within a year of their release, according to the report. In the first year of the overhaul, about 65 percent of that group reoffended, showing a modest improvement. Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak said Friday that the drop in repeat offenses, also called recidivism, was a good sign. However, the report only looked at October 2011 to September 2012 because more recent data was not available. More strides have been made in Santa Cruz County since then, he said. "It's still a work in progress, and we're doing everything we can to make it succeed," Wowak said. "Our recidivism rate is lower than most of the rest of the state." Read More. |
