The Kearny County, Kan., Law Enforcement Center contacted the Morton County Law Enforcement Center last Tuesday around 9 a.m. at Elkhart, regarding possible information on an escaped inmate, Jeremy Watkins. Information had been received that Watkins previously had acquaintances in the Rolla area. Kearny County investigators requested Morton County units check department records for any contacts with Watkins. Morton County Sheriff's Department officers later contacted Kearny County. Morton County, who had taken two reports of burglaries in or around Rolla earlier in the day. One was a report of an aggravated residential burglary and theft in Rolla around 7 a.m. Taken in the burglary was a shotgun. The second report was of an auto burglary and theft in which a cellular telephone was taken. It was determined that both were related. On Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at 1 p.m., the Kearny County Law Enforcement Center received a report of a motor vehicle theft from a residence in Lakin. The vehicle stolen was a 1994 Chevy extended cab pickup belonging to Nick and Mindy Malone. The vehicle was taken sometime during the previous night or morning. In a coordinated investigation involving officers in Kearny, Hamilton and Morton Counties, information was developed linking the Morton County burglaries and Kearny County auto theft. These cases are believed related to the escape from custody occurring at the Kearny County Jail on the night of Oct. 25, 2004. Charges have been filed in that case and the escapee is being sought nationwide. Agencies from southwest Kansas and other states are actively assisting in that case. |
