Eight Staten Islanders were among scores of retired New York City police officers, firefighters and prison guards who were charged Tuesday with faking psychiatric problems in order to get federal disability benefits, Manhattan D.A. Cyrus R. Vance Jr. said.

Some falsely claimed that their conditions arose after the Sept. 11 attacks, Vance said.

Among scores of defendants charged with grand larceny in the second degree and criminal facilitation in the fourth degree were the following Islanders, according to Vance's office: Anne Marie Aglialoro, 55; John Arezzo, 67, of Eltingville; Donald Avenoso, 57, Meiers Corners; Thomas Damon, 47, Tottenville; Vincent LaMantia, 43, New Dorp; John Massoni, 49, Great Kills; Lauren Mazza, 45, Great Kills, and John Orosz, 42, Richmond.

No address was available for Ms. Aglialoro. None of the defendants could be reached.

Four ringleaders coached the former workers on how to falsely describe symptoms of depression and other mental health problems that allowed them to get payouts high as $500,000, Vance said. The ringleaders made tens of thousands in dollars in secret kickbacks, he said.

Among the retirees arrested were 72 city police officers, eight firefighters, five corrections officers and one Nassau County Police Department officer.
