| Victim Blaming and the Reality of Sexual Violence |

Sexual violence against girls (and women) is an accepted part of American culture, particularly when carried out by privileged males. This is the starkest aspect of something called rape culture, defined by the Women’s Center of Marshall University as “an environment in which rape is prevalent and in which sexual violence against women is normalized and excused in the media and popular culture.” It may be shocking to consider that this is one of our cultural norms, but we don’t have to look far for evidence. This week news broke that Ma’lik Richmond, convicted at 16 of raping an unconscious girl the same age, was released after serving nine months in juvenile detention. Richmond and another boy, Trent Mays, who is still serving his sentence, were members of their high school football team in Steubenville, Ohio. The story has resurrected the conversation about rape and sexual violence in general, but it will soon predictably fade away again. Read More. |
