The Idaho Department of Corrections must hire a warden, 72 correctional officers and more staff before July 1 to ensure a smooth transition as it takes over the Idaho Correctional Center south of Boise. Director Brent Reinke requested an additional $1.9 million from legislative budget writers Friday. Gov. C.L.“Butch” Otter has announced that the state will operate the prison once its contract with Corrections Corporation of America ends June 30. The nearly $2 million, which would pay for uniforms, firearms and other equipment, needs approval from the Joint Finance Appropriations Committee. Taxpayers now spend $29 million a year for CCA to operate the 2,080-bed prison, which has been sued repeatedly and investigated for alleged violence, gang activity and understaffing. The state cost to run the prison will be “comparable,” Reinke said. More details will be released Feb. 5 when the department presents its budget to the committee. Otter’s proposed budget allotted $25 million to operate the prison. The DOC needs to start hiring correctional officers now because all new recruits must complete nine weeks of training before starting work, said Deputy Director Kevin Kempf. Training includes one week of job shadowing and three weeks of field training. Read More. |
