The family of a Vermont inmate who committed suicide last year has sued the state and several prison employees, alleging that he was badly mistreated and was denied treatment that could have helped him deal with his mental problems. The complaint, filed last Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Burlington on behalf of Claire Quigley, the mother of James Quigley, does not request a specific amount of monetary damages. The suit alleges that the treatment of James Quigley constituted "cruel and unusual punishment" and that prison employees knew about his mistreatment and did nothing to prevent it. It also alleges that Quigley did not receive adequate mental health treatment. Corrections Commissioner Steven Gold said he had not seen the lawsuit and declined comment. Officials of the two companies that provided mental health services also could not be reached for comment. |
