Deadline Friday to reveal execution drug

MANSFIELD — The state corrections department has a deadline of Friday to inform attorneys representing a convicted child killer how they plan to execute him next month.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Stephen Riedlinger set the deadline in a Jan. 13 ruling in which Christopher Sepulvado’s attorneys sought more information on the execution protocol. Another death row inmate, Jessie Hoffman, is also a plaintiff in the lawsuit.

Wrote Riedlinger, “The information sought by the plaintiff is relevant to significant and disputed issues, including whether the state’s execution protocol lacks adequate safeguards to ensure that their respective executions are performed without incident, why the state’s previous execution protocols were changed on the eve of an execution and the likelihood of another change occurring before the plaintiff’s execution, and whether the execution will be carried out in a uniform fashion.”

As of late Thursday, the state had not responded to the judge’s ruling, attorney Gary Clements said in an email to The Times.
