SAN QUENTIN, Calif. — A Poway man convicted of strangling an ex-girlfriend to death and fatally bludgeoning her 5-year-old son in April 1985 died after a four-story fall at San Quentin State Prison, prison officials said Thursday.

Thomas Curby Henderson, 60, fell Tuesday and died at a hospital Wednesday, said Terry Thornton, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The death appeared to be a suicide, the Marin County Coroner said.

Thornton said the prison is still investigating.

Henderson was serving 40 years to life in prison and was set to have his first parole hearing March 12. He was convicted in December 1985 of first- and second-degree murder. A San Diego judge said the killings “showed a high degree of cruelty, viciousness and callousness.”
