Vt. inmate injured in Ky. Fracas

A Vermont inmate being housed in Kentucky received minor injuries when a fight broke out early Friday morning among 10 prisoners, including four from Vermont.
The prisoner, whose name was not released by Vermont officials or the company that runs the prison, was taken to an area hospital and had stitches put in his face and was returned to prison.
The problems began on Thursday night when a group of prisoners living on one side of a wing of the Lee Adjustment Center in Beattyville, Ky., walked to the other side of the wing and began making noise to disturb another group of inmates who were sleeping. There was a shouting match but no violence ensued. The next morning, two of the prisoners who had been sleeping walked to the other side to wake up the other inmates and a fight took place, according to the Vermont Corrections Department and the Corrections Corp. of America, which runs the prison.
An inmate from Kentucky was struck in the head with a fire extinguisher and had stitches put in his head at an area hospital and was released.
Vermont has been housing prisoners at CCA facilities in Arizona and Kentucky since January because there is not enough space for them in Vermont. About 400 prisoners are incarcerated the Lee facility.
Raymond Flum, who oversees the Vermont prisoners being incarcerated out of state for the Department of Corrections, said the incident is still being investigated by CCA and two officials from the department who are in Kentucky monitoring the treatment of Vermont inmates.
CCA spokesman Steve Owen said all the prisoners believed to be involved in the fight are being housed separately, pending an outcome of the investigation. He described the fight as an "isolated incident.''
The fight occurred almost seven weeks after a riot at the same prison facility that caused extensive damage and followed prisoner complaints about the food and arbitrary punishments from prison officers. Since then, CCA has replaced the warden who was in charge when the riot occurred on Sept. 14.
