Two new corrections officer positions will be filled as Allegan County prepares to move into its new jail this spring. County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday, Jan. 23, to add the positions, a move that is designed to make the corrections pool of officers more robust. County administrator Rob Sarro explained that for every person on the job in the jail, the sheriff department should employ a recommended eight individuals. That number is known as shift relief; it accounts for the number of people to cover that position 24/7 with leeway for several to be on injured time off or away for training or vacation. “Independent of the new building, we have dealt with shift relief through overtime,” Sarro said and the county has made due with a shift relief of only seven. The jail is currently staffed by approximately 38; a transition consultant has calculated that the jail would need a staff of 47 to be at the full, recommended shift relief. Sarro said, “We’ve maintained most of that through overtime. That’s been a cost effective way to do that.” Read More. |
