| Prison officers ask to be allowed to keep guns in cars |

Oregon correctional officers want to keep guns in their cars during the workday, a practice currently banned by the Department of Corrections, according to testimony Monday. House Bill 4035 came before the House Judiciary Committee, and not for the first time. The same idea was introduced during the 2013 session but never made it out of committee, and most people involved said this issue has come up three or four times in the past. The bill would allow corrections officers to keep guns locked in their cars in prison parking lots while they’re at work. The practice was allowed in the past, but the Department of Administrative Services created a rule banning firearms on state properties in 2008, and corrections officials interpreted that to include prison parking lots.
