Baldwin to Retire as Corrections Director |

John Baldwin, director of the state Department of Corrections, told a legislative budget panel Tuesday he plans to end his tenure with the state agency next January after 42 years and three months. The leader of the system that oversees Iowa’s prisons and community-based corrections said he has seen many changes in his continuous service with the department, most notably a prison population that grew from about 1,500 when he arrived to the current 8,098 head count of offenders behind bars. Baldwin told members of the Legislature’s joint justice systems budget subcommittee that he expects the prison population to stabilize at around 8,100 and at about 30,800 in CBC facilities statewide.
