'Step 1’ of repurposing Mount Mcgregor Correctional Facility concludes with release of report |

Health care, tourism, recreation or a casino are all feasible reuses for the Mount McGregor Correctional Facility property, after the prison closes in July, according to a recent Empire State Development Corp. report. “The greatest unknown for repurposing this site is not the uses that the site can handle; it is the interest from the private market,” the report concludes. There are “no land use feasibility issues” with any of those four types of uses, but maintaining a campus like setting would likely be necessary in order to reuse the existing buildings, because most of the buildings are connected with a steam tunnel heating system, the report stated. Establishing individual heating systems for each building would be expensive. The report recommends state agencies and community leaders work together to develop a strategy that fits with goals of the Capital Region economic development plan. Read More. |
