A woman charged two weeks ago with the four-year old slaying of her husband died late Oct. 29 of a drug overdose in the Hoke County (N.C.) Jail, authorities said. Deborah Britt Scaggs was being held without bail charged with murder in the death of her husband, James M. Scaggs. She told jailers about six hours after her arrest that she had taken 150 doses of prescription drugs. A deputy drove her to a hospital in Moore County, where she died. The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into when Scaggs took the drugs and whether lawmen followed proper procedures. The investigation is expected to take about a month, said Jerry Weaver, an SBI special agent in charge. Scaggs took the pills before deputies arrived at her home to arrest her or smuggled them into jail despite a search, said Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin. Jailers had no reason to suspect Scaggs was suicidal and no reason to do a cavity search, Peterkin said. |
