A judge ruled last Monday that eight inmates must stand trial in connection with a race riot last year at Eagle Mountain prison that left two inmates dead and seven injured. After a three-week preliminary hearing, Riverside County (Calif.) Superior Court Judge Richard Erwood found the prosecution presented enough evidence to go forward with trial on charges of murder using a weapon and the special circumstance that the homicide was a hate crime, said Senior Deputy District Attorney David Greenberg in a telephone interview. In the Oct. 25, 2003, riot at the now-closed prison, Latinos and whites banded together and attacked black inmates, along with a few Asians who associated with the black prisoners, according to authorities. The Latino and white inmates chased the black prisoners, who ran into a yard, Greenberg said. "Maybe 50 jumped over the fence and made it and two did not." The two black inmates who died were Rodman Fitzgerald Wallace, 39, of North Hollywood, and Master Leroy Hampton, 34, of Altadena. The defendants face life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty if convicted on all charges. Greenberg said his office hopes to make a decision on whether to seek the death penalty by Nov. 29, when the inmates are scheduled to be back in court. |
