Investigators from the Kane County (Ill.) sheriff's office are trying to determine why an Illinois Department of Corrections youth supervisor was killed in a drive-by shooting last Sunday night in Aurora. Capt. Mike Acosta said investigators had spoken to corrections representatives about a possible link between the murder of Duranthony Evans, 34, and his job. "We don't see a connection, but we're still looking into that," Acosta said. Evans' mother, Dorothy Thomas, said last Monday she believed the bullets were not meant for her son. "It seemed like it would have happened to anyone who came along at that place and time," said Thomas, with whom her son lived in Aurora. Evans was assigned to the Illinois Youth Center, an all-male, medium-security facility in St. Charles where he had worked since January 1999, said Corrections Department spokeswoman Dede Short. Evans and the person family members identified as a cousin were driving around Aurora, investigators said, and stopped at a gas station. After leaving, the two stopped at North and Farnsworth Avenues in southeastern Aurora Township. A dark, medium-sized vehicle pulled alongside Evans' vehicle and the occupant began shooting, said the cousin, whose name has not been released. Witnesses said they heard six to eight shots. The family was told by the Kane coroner's office that Evans was hit by four bullets. Evans was pronounced dead at the scene. |
