A 49-year-old man, who police said may be a member of the Mexican Mafia, walked into a Texas halfway house last Sunday night and shot two men, one of them fatally, police said. Jesse Onofre remained on the loose Monday and was being sought by police. Onofre is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. He was wearing khaki clothing when he was last seen running along some railroad tracks on North Hackberry. Police said Onofre was armed with a 9-mm handgun when he allegedly shot Adam Puente, 27, and Vicente Gomez, 19, in the lounge area of the Hall House on North Hackberry and Interstate 35. Puente and Gomez were transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where Puente died. Gomez was listed in critical condition. Lt. Brian Head, of the San Antonio Police Department, said no one at the halfway house claimed to have witnessed the shooting. Police have not established a motive. Paul Biever, the director of Hall House, said the shooting was the first such incident at the home since its opening in 1975. Residents of Hall House are people who are on parole or probation and are being conditioned back into the community. |
