The death of an inmate who was attacked last month in a jail cell in the Bronx, N.Y., was ruled a homicide last Thursday, opening the door for the district attorney's office to seek a murder charge against another inmate. The medical examiner's office determined that Ronald Fesce, 54, died after his head struck a bench on Oct. 12 in a holding cell in the Bronx Criminal Court, his widow, Carmen Cerezo, 50, said Thursday. Fesce was awaiting a hearing on a drug charge when he was allegedly attacked by Kenny Taylor, 27. Taylor was charged with assault after the incident. Cerezo said that prosecutors told her Fesce and Taylor began arguing on the Department of Correction bus that was taking them to court. It continued in the court holding pen. Police said that Fesce, who did not initially report the attack, attended the hearing that day and was returned to the Vernon C. Bain Center, a jail barge in Hunts Point. On Oct. 13, an officer noticed a bruise on Fesce's face and sent him to the jail's medical clinic. A correction department source said Fesce insisted that he was okay and was sent back to his jail cell. The next day a correction officer spotted Fesce passed out in his cell and took him to the jail's clinic. He was then taken to Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center where he lapsed into a coma. Fesce died on Oct. 18 of blunt force trauma to the head, which caused brain injuries and skull fractures, said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the medical examiner. Steve Reed, a spokesman for the Bronx district attorney, said prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine if charges against Taylor, who was in court in a robbery case the day of the attack, should be upgraded to murder. |
