| Metro jail overcrowding persists despite new beds |

Davidson County's (Tenn.) most serious inmate overcrowding situation won't be fixed by last weekend's move of more than 200 inmates to a new county jail, Sheriff Daron Hall said. The new, 300-bed Offender Reentry Center at 5131 Harding Place is open, but that won't help its neighbor, the Metro Detention Facility, which will stay well above its official capacity for at least the next few months, Hall said. The new jail is a minimum-security facility, and it can't accept any inmates from the medium-security Metro Detention Facility. There are consistently about 1,300 inmates at the Detention Facility; its capacity is 892. It is the most overcrowded facility in Davidson County. The facility has been in danger of losing its certification from the Tennessee Corrections Institute because of overcrowding. Authorities also are investigating the death of a female inmate there in July whose death has been ruled a homicide. It is operated by the private, Nashville-based Corrections Corporation of America. The Metro Detention Facility will have some relief in January, Hall said. That is when 400 of Davidson County's female inmates will move into a new jail being constructed for women only. More jail and prison space could open in the coming months and years, Hall said. The state has approved spending $10.2 million to add 350-380 beds by modifying the Metro Detention Facility, Hall said. The expansion depends on Metro approval, and once that happens, it would take an estimated 12-18 months for the construction, Hall said. Hall said he wants Metro, the county, CCA and the state to develop a strongly worded contract to keep the inmate population at the Metro Detention Facility from ever going over its rated capacity. |
