Escaped killer: Inmates note 'weak spot' in prison security

IONIA, MI – About two years ago, Michael Elliot listened as another inmate at the Ionia Correctional Facility described a “weak spot” in prison security.

Elliot had reason to pay attention. He considered escape his only way out from serving four natural life sentences for a quadruple murder.

Four months ago, his planning started taking shape. He watched prison staff around the sally port, where inmates are transported to and from the prison, and he studied the fences surrounding the facility, according to a report from the state Department of Corrections.
