Feds lower rates for inmate phone calls

Inmates in Bergen and Passaic counties' jails are paying less to make interstate calls as the result of a Federal Communications Commission ruling that imposed a cap on what companies can charge to run an inmate phone system.

In Bergen County, where the ruling went into effect Feb. 7, a 15-minute long-distance collect call can't exceed $3.75. The same call used to cost $13.85, according to advocates for the reduction. That is about 73 percent less than what the families and friends of inmates at the jail had been paying to accept a collect call.

The ruling also prohibited telephone companies from passing on to inmates and their families the cost of commission payments that were paid to jail or prison operators.
