| Feds lower rates for inmate phone calls |

Inmates in Bergen and Passaic counties' jails are paying less to make interstate calls as the result of a Federal Communications Commission ruling that imposed a cap on what companies can charge to run an inmate phone system. In Bergen County, where the ruling went into effect Feb. 7, a 15-minute long-distance collect call can't exceed $3.75. The same call used to cost $13.85, according to advocates for the reduction. That is about 73 percent less than what the families and friends of inmates at the jail had been paying to accept a collect call. The ruling also prohibited telephone companies from passing on to inmates and their families the cost of commission payments that were paid to jail or prison operators. Read More. |
