An Illinois Appellate Court last Tuesday blocked a ruling by a lower court judge to remove the director of the Cook County Jail. Three appellate justices signed an order that leaves Callie Baird in office while Sheriff Michael Sheahan decides whether to appeal a ruling that he appointed Baird illegally. The order by the appeals court came one day after Cook County Judge Martin Agran ordered Baird to leave her position by 5 p.m. last Tuesday. The Appellate Court acted on an emergency motion brought by Sheahan last Tuesday afternoon, keeping Baird in place while the legal battle continues. Three members of a five-member advisory board to Sheahan filed suit against the sheriff last year after Sheahan selected Baird to run the county Department of Corrections. The three board members, led by the board chairman, Rev. Harold Bailey, argued state law said Sheahan was required to pick a jail chief from a list of three finalists the board selected. Baird was not among the final three. Agran ruled in favor of the three board members who sued, and last Monday he said Baird would have to vacate the office by the end of work Tuesday. The legal maneuvering comes as Sheahan is planning to replace Bailey on the board. |
