| Atwater federal prisoner pleads guilty to killing corrections officer |

ATWATER, California -- A prisoner the United State Penitentiary in Atwater, Calif., pleaded guilty Tuesday to murdering a corrections officer in June 2008. James Ninete Leon Guerrero, 48, of Guam, pleaded guilty to one count of murder, according to the U.S. Department of Justice. Court documents state the officer, 22-year-old Jose Rivera, was conducting his daily count when Guerrero and another inmate, Jose Cabrera Sablan, attacked him with a homemade shank. Authorities say Rivera tried to get away but the two men knocked him down. They say Guerrero held him down while Sablan stabbed him more than 20 times. Guerrero’s faces a mandatory life sentence through a plea agreement. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for May 30. Read More. |
