Trenton, Ga., Church of God's new building flooded with sewage last week. Mayor Anthony Emanuel said last Tuesday that the contractor who built the building didn't install a check valve to prevent leakage, so he violated building codes and will be required to pay the expenses. Trenton City Commission discussed the problem at their monthly meeting last Monday, saying they needed to know who was to blame for the accident. Emanuel said expenses were estimated at $25,000. "If the check valve is in there, then we have a financial obligation, I think," Emanuel said at the meeting. "We need to know and we need to know very quickly (who is responsible) because we've disrupted their worship service and that's just intolerable." The county jail was also part of the problem though, city officials said. Emanuel said crews had discovered shirts, plastic items, and forks clogging up sewer lines. County prisoners, he said, simply flush the things down the toilet. Dade County Commissioner Allan Bradford attended last Monday's meeting. He said during an interview afterward that the county voted last week to spend $29,000 to buy equipment to chop up the debris prisoners expel into the lines. He said the equipment should resolve the city's problem, but not the county's problem of having to replace items trustees flush. For years, the city fathers have complained that the county jail clogs their sewer lines with items that cause costly blockages and expensive equipment repairs. Trenton foots the bill. |
