| Georgia grants higher jail subsidy to Chatham County, others while decreasing funding |

Chatham County and other Georgia counties that house convicted criminals awaiting state prisons recently won a long-awaited victory at the state Capitol. But the win comes at a cost as overall appropriations have drastically been cut. For about a decade, sheriffs have sought more funding from the state to subsidize costs related to keeping state inmates in their jails. In Chatham County, Sheriff Al St Lawrence has taken to having deputies drive inmates directly to prisons as soon as they’re sentenced, rather than relying on the state to pick them up at its convenience. Commission Chairman Al Scott has even asked the chief Superior Court judge to have more cases tried to reduce the time inmates spend awaiting trial. Read More. |
