PORTLAND (AP) — Oregon Department of Corrections statistics show the number of Oregon inmates given classroom education fell nearly 13 percent between 2009 and 2013. That led to fewer prisoners earning GEDs. Corrections spokeswoman Betty Bernt told The Oregonian that state spending on the prison system’s Adult Basic Skills Development program fell by about $100,000 during that span, reflecting a national trend in the reduction of prison education budgets.
