| MDOC proposes $3M in prison security improvements |

Just over a month after a convicted killer escaped from the Ionia Correctional Facility, the Department of Corrections wants to spend about $3 million to improve lighting, cameras and fencing there and at three other Michigan prisons. But a Corrections Department spokesman said Monday all four projects were “already in the works” when Michael David Elliot escaped from Ionia on Feb. 2. “None of these projects were the result of, or accelerated because of the escape,” said Russ Marlan. Contracts for the security work are set to be approved today by a State Administrative Board committee. The contracts will then require approval from the full State Administrative Board on March 25.
