SPRINGFIELD -- Over the objections of Republican lawmakers, Gov. Pat Quinn's pick to run the state's massive prison system won an early endorsement from a Senate panel Monday. S.A. "Tony" Godinez received the green light on his confirmation as director of the Illinois Department of Corrections from the Senate Executive Appointments Committee. A final vote before the full Senate is expected within the next two weeks. The 7-2 vote, however, came only after Senate leaders scheduled the meeting in Chicago on the day before Tuesday's primary election, rather than when the Senate is normally in session in Springfield. The venue meant a number of committee members from central and southern Illinois -- home to the majority of the state's prisons -- did not attend the hearing, requiring Senate President John Cullerton, D-Chicago, to appoint temporary members to push Godinez and his $150,200 salary over the finish line for the Democratic governor.
