| Prisoner uses socks to escape shackles |

King County (Wash.) jail officers and Kent Police are investigating how an inmate was able to escape from a transport bus. He pried his way out a door as the bus was stopped about 7:30 Wednesday morning on an I-5 on-ramp. He ran across the Kent-Des Moines park-and-ride lot. Pursuing officers fired one or two shots but no one was hit. "I saw the guy come through the bushes," said witness Joanne Williamson. "The police were after him and there was some gunshot fire." Finally, a man who saw what was happening tackled the escapee. The helpful bystander apparently took a bus to work. Police are still trying to find him to take his statement. The county Department of Adult and Juvenile Detention says the inmate was on the loose no longer than half an hour. The inmate, Reginald Merchant, is jailed for investigation of robbery, assault and possession of a stolen firearm. He reportedly has a previous history of escape in Louisiana. He apparently wore several pairs of socks so he could slip out of ankle shackles. "As they put the ankle chains on his ankles they would do it loosely because of the bulge of the socks that were around his ankles," explained Lt. Bob Holt of Kent Police. "Therefor, he could slip the chains when he made his escape." The bus routinely transports inmates between the jail at the Regional Justice Center in Kent and the King County Courthouse in Seattle. |
