Eight correctional officers were injured during a confrontation Thursday with three inmates at the New Lisbon Correctional Institution in Wisc., authorities said. Bill Clausius, spokesman for the state Department of Corrections, said all eight injured officers were treated for injuries and released. The three inmates were transferred to the Columbia Correctional Institution in Portage. Clausius said the 1,000-bed prison was locked down as of 5 p.m. Thursday, which stops all prisoner movement. He said the incident began around 1:20 p.m. when an inmate in Unit A resisted a transfer and ran out of the unit. He was apprehended by three officers just outside the institution's gymnasium, Clausius said. At 1:50 p.m., there was a call from the same unit that two other inmates attacked six staff members at the officers' station. The inmates were subdued, but the officers were injured, Clausius said. The incidents were under investigation by the Department of Corrections, the Juneau County Sheriff's Department and New Lisbon Police Department. |
