Concord art exhibit focuses attention on prisoners' children

On a perfect day, Bryce Jarvis and his father, Anthony, would play checkers for hours in a room filled with books. They might read together and later return home to Claremont, to be with Angel, Bryce’s mother, and Arabella, his 5-year-old sister.

The latter has not been possible since early last year, when Anthony, 35, was sentenced to time in state prison. But due to a partnership between the corrections department and Camp Spaulding, a nonprofit youth camp in Penacook, the former was. For two days last August, Bryce, 8, and six other children were able to visit their fathers in the Concord prison, playing games, eating meals and creating colorful murals with the theme, “A perfect day with dad.”

That artwork, as well as three smaller pieces from the women’s prison, are now on display at the Kimball-Jenkins Estate in Concord. The goal of the exhibit, which opened yesterday and runs through April 24, is to shed light on the challenges faced by children of incarcerated adults.
