| Minnehaha County to add slowly on jail beds |

Within 20 years, Minnehaha County is projected to need as many as 957 secure jail beds, more than twice the 400 it has now, and the county’s Community Corrections Center also is rapidly becoming obsolete. However, building a $20 million jail and staffing it at a cost of $8 million a year is more than the county commission wants to bite off at once. On Tuesday, commissioners decided to address the needs incrementally. The commission accepted an interim report from its advisory committee on future jail bed requirements. This included an analysis from a consultant, Bill Garnos. He predicts the county will need 714 total jail beds by 2018, to a maximum of 957 beds by 2033.
