| Nebraska Legislature confirms Mike Kenney as state corrections director |

LINCOLN — State senators confirmed the appointment of Mike Kenney as director of the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services on Thursday, despite hearing objections that he represents the “status quo” at a troubled agency. Kenney was appointed to the job in September by Gov. Dave Heineman after the abrupt retirement of former state prisons chief Bob Houston. The department has been in the spotlight because of chronic overcrowding of state prisons, which risks a lawsuit, and because of a string of incidents involving inmates after their release from prison. That includes the case of Nikko Jenkins, who stands accused of four Omaha slayings that occurred shortly after he completed a prison sentence last summer. Read More. |
