Colombia's president dismissed four military officers after an army major jailed for taking part in an assassination attempt on a left-wing politician escaped from a military prison. "(The military) must have total trust from the public and to have this trust they need to be absolutely transparent," President Alvaro Uribe said at a presidential summit in Brazil shortly after firing the officers on Nov. 4. Maj. Cesar Maldonado, who escaped Nov. 2 or 3, is the most recent imprisoned army official to break out of a military prison, rekindling suspicion that their former colleagues are aiding the escapes. Officials at the military prison in Bogota said they realized Maldonado was missing while conducting a roll call on Nov. 3, said Deputy Army Chief Gen. Eduardo Morales, adding that the circumstances remain unclear. The four officers removed from duty are Col. Jesus Maria Vivas, commander of the 13th Brigade, a lieutenant colonel, a major who was in charge of the military prison, and a lieutenant, according to a statement from Colombia's armed forces commander, Gen. Carlos Alberto Ospina. Vice President Francisco Santos told local radio on Nov. 5 the escape "is an embarrassment" and added that any military officers who aided Maldonado's escape would be punished. Maldonado is the latest army officer with alleged ties to outlawed right-wing paramilitary factions to vanish from jail. Last week, Colombian troops killed a U.S.-trained army officer who had escaped from a military prison five years ago and joined the paramilitaries after being charged with murdering a state official. Maldonado was convicted two years ago of attempted murder for his involvement in a failed December 2000 attack in which gunmen fired on a car carrying Wilson Borja, an influential former trade union leader who is now a congressman. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison. |
