| Change to Indiana Criminal Code brings concerns of jail overcrowding |

A change to Indiana's criminal code has Shelby County Sheriff Mike Bowlby concerned about the possibility of overcrowding in the county jail. House Bill 1006 amended the Indiana Code concerning criminal law. As a result, lawmakers are searching for a way to keep offenders of lower class crimes out of state prisons and get them into community corrections programs. "If a court normally sends a person to prison, they've already been through all the programs and still don't want to follow the rules," Bowlby said. Bowlby is afraid those who still do not want to follow the rules will wind up in his jail, which is pushing its capacity limits.
