Prison locked down after prisoner climbs overhang

Massachusetts's highest security prison in Shirley was locked down this afternoon after a prisoner scaled a twelve-foot overhang and remained there for more than an hour. Prison officials say the inmate, whose name was not released, eventually climbed down a ladder and was being detained and questioned.
Staff put mattresses on the ground below the man during the 75-minute ordeal, in case he fell.
Correction spokeswoman Kelly Nantel says the inmate scaled the overhang as he was going outside to the recreation yard.
She says the inmate disrupted the facility but was never in danger of escaping because he was always within the confines of the prison compound.
