Jail officers said one inmate bit off part of another inmate's lip during a fight last week in the Birmingham City Jail (Ala.). The fight occurred just before noon at the Birmingham City Jail, when two inmates fought for five full minutes, eventually wrestling each other to ground, without the interruption of officers. After the fight, one officer was fired. Other officers have said they don't always respond to fights right away because there's no one to back them up. Two veteran officers at the Birmingham City Jail agreed to talk to NBC13 if the station didn't disclose their names. They said they're up against more violent outbursts with less help. The head of the jail said he is short 16 correctional officers and is waiting on the personnel board to supply him with a list of applicants. In the meantime, officers work a lot of overtime. They said morale is low and they're exhausted and overwhelmed. The jail is under its capacity of 410. The crowding comes when cellblocks are merged to make it easier to monitor inmates. The correctional officers see no signs of relief despite their complaints to higher-ups. A police department spokesman said they have plans to increase the manpower. As for the fight caught on tape, personnel records show the appropriate officer did not make her rounds every 30 minutes. Since she is appealing her removal, Chief Annetta Nunn declined NBC13's request for an interview. |
