Rawlins – On April 21-23, 2014, the Wyoming State Penitentiary (WSP) became the fourth of five Wyoming Department of Corrections’ facilities to undergo an audit leading to national accreditation with the American Correctional Association (ACA). The WSP is pleased to announce that the ACA Audit was successful. The institution achieved 100% in meeting 59 mandatory standards set by the ACA and 99.77% of the 436 non-mandatory standards that applied to the facility. The minimum passing scores are 100% of mandatory standards and 90% of non-mandatory standards. Founded in 1870, ACA is the oldest international association developed specifically for practitioners in the correctional profession. ACA is the most widely respected organization setting standards practice for correctional facilities and programs. The ACA Auditors’ job was to ensure the WSP met or exceeded nearly 500 best practice standards and measures for prison facilities, operations, and programs. Each of the ACA Auditors commented that WSP staff were professional in all their interactions, and many inmates confirmed the level of staff professionalism. The Audit team toured the facility, reviewed records, and interviewed many inmates and staff to make their assessment. Auditors also reviewed the facility’s conditions of confinement and determined that the WSP was in compliance with standards and provided an acceptable quality of life for the offenders in its care. “This is a great accomplishment, but only the beginning,” said WSP Warden Eddie Wilson. “The facility will be audited every three years from now on in order to maintain its accreditation. That means that staff and programs will always be at this level or better. I am very proud of the work the WSP corrections team has accomplished and expect that we will only get better at what we do. I appreciate the opportunity to be a part of Director Lampert’s vision for the Wyoming Department of Corrections,” Wilson said. |
