| Montana’s correctional system almost exceeding capacity |

The number of criminal offenders in Montana’s correctional system has increased by about 2,000 people in the past year, pushing the system to its limits, state Corrections Director Mike Batista said Monday. “We are at or near capacity in our prisons and our probation-and-parole and community programs,” Batista told a legislative panel. Batista also said a prominent public-policy group has agreed to do some preliminary work in Montana this year, evaluating the state’s correctional system for possible cost-saving revisions.
