| Surprise deaths plague prison |

Of the nine inmates who died unexpectedly in Oregon prisons in the past year, four were housed at Two Rivers Correctional Institution. The Umatilla prison also saw the largest spike in inmate population in the state in the same time period. The causes of death for the four men are varied — one inmate hanged himself, another may have died from a methamphetamine overdose, and the other two are still under investigation. The state only reports unexpected deaths like these, and not expected deaths such as those in prison hospice care or with terminal illnesses. Betty Bernt, DOC communications manager, said 25 inmates died in state prisons from April 21, 2013, to April 21, 2014. Nine of those were unexpected or lack a cause.
