How did you get your start? I started in the Corrections Department in 1988. I worked there until 2006, when I switched over to be a training coordinator. I have been at Cecil County Detention Center for 26 years. How did you train for the job? It was an on-the-job training when I first started in corrections, there was one sergeant here who did all the training by himself. With my background in the military, I said, “This guy looks like he needs some help.” So I started off as a basic instructor and I continued to do the job. My correctional time was almost up when I applied to be the training coordinator. I retired, took off 30 days and came back to work. I have been under the same roof since 1988, just in a different uniform. I do all of the basic training mandated by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission, then I teach our weaknesses to our staff. Myself and a team of instructors teach on a monthly basis to keep up with the trends. What essential skills are required? We take seminars and go to the academy to keep up with the current trends. I pride myself on being pretty organized. We try to stay on top of things. We do in-service training once a month. I teach learning, understanding and application. The application is the most important part and you learn better if they get it on a month-to-month basis and use the training. Read More. |
