| Sheriff: Fiscal restraints leave jail short on guards |

ALFRED, Maine — The York County Jail has a shortage of correctional officers due to a gap in state funds, a cap on what it can collect from York County taxes and a high turnover rate of employees, according to York County Sheriff Maurice Ouellette. The annual budget for the jail is $10.3 million and, by law, it is capped at receiving $8.3 million from county taxpayers, Ouellette said this week. The state is supposed to make up the difference, but doesn't, he said. Temporary relief was announced Thursday when both the state Senate and House voted to override Gov. Paul LePage's veto of a bill that releases $1.2 million to be shared among the state's 15 county jails. Ouellette called the funds "a drop in the bucket." Read More. |
