Transparency vital in execution process

In the early evening hours of April 29, Clayton Lockett, a death-row prisoner in Oklahoma, died. His death occurred during the execution process, and at this moment it is unknown if it was caused by drugs used during the process or something else.

Preliminary accounts report that Lockett was writhing, clenching his teeth, straining to raise his head and speaking — after a doctor said that he was sedated. The public will not know what happened next, as prison officials closed the curtain in the execution chamber.

Information about what occurred during is starting to seep out. The Oklahoma Department of Corrections released a letter providing some new information. A phlebotomist could not find a "viable insertion point" in Lockett's arms, legs or feet. A doctor examined Lockett's neck and "then went to the groin area." Someone then inserted a central line in Lockett's femoral vein. It is not clear if the unknown person successfully inserted the line.
