Michigan’s Civil Service Commission deadlocked 2-2 on a union challenge to the state’s privatization of its prison food service, meaning a three-year, $145-million contract with Aramark Correctional Services of Philadelphia will remain in place. It’s likely the fight over the contract will move to the state courts, a union spokesman said. In an opinion released Wednesday, Commission Chairman Thomas (Mac) Wardrop and Commissioner James Barrett rejected the appeal by Michigan AFSCME Council 25 and the Michigan Association of Governmental Employees. Commissioners Charles Blockett, Jr. and Robert Swanson wanted to grant the appeal and turn the issue over to the state Employment Relations Board for further proceedings. Read More. |
