A man facing murder charges escaped into the Indio, Calif., streets Monday, as he was being transported from one jail to another, Riverside County Sheriff's Department reported. The department is investigating how 25-year-old Steven Mathew Sanchez managed to escape from the back seat of a moving patrol car and continued searching for the man they say should be considered armed and dangerous, said Sgt. Earl Quinata, public information officer with the department. Sanchez was being transported by one deputy from Riverside County Jail in Blythe to Indio at 12:23 a.m. when he escaped from the back seat of the moving patrol car, the department reported. Several units from the Indio Sheriff's station, Indio Police Department and K-9 units searched the area around Jackson Street and Requa Avenue but could not find him, the department reported. Sanchez is described as a Hispanic male about 5 feet 9 inches, 150 pounds with a shaved head and brown eyes, according to a report. He has a tattoo reading "Mi Madre Cecelia" on his left chest, deputies reported. Sanchez would face murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon charges along with two other men who are still in custody stemming from a suspected gang-related shooting in Coachella in May 2003. Sanchez was arrested almost a year ago with Robert Shawn Ochoa and Jose Pedro Corona after a fight broke out during a party and two men were shot. Ingrid Wyatt, public information officer with the Riverside District Attorney's office, said Sanchez has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him and could face life in prison if convicted. |
