The Nevada state prison north of Lovelock was locked down over the weekend after a fight involving some 16 inmates. Four were slightly injured. Warden Craig Farwell said the inmates ignored warnings over loudspeakers and blank warning shots, forcing officers to fire shotguns filled with birdshot at the ground near the battling prisoners. The injured inmates were treated at the prison infirmary and did not require being taken to a hospital. An investigation has determined who was involved, but it's still not known what led up to the fight in the prison yard, according to Assistant Corrections Director Glen Whorton. The weekend lockdown gave prison workers a chance to search inmates and cells. Things returned to normal on Tuesday. The prison is a medium-security facility just north of Lovelock about 75 miles from Reno on Interstate 80. It houses 1,566 prisoners, according to Whorton, including about half the sex offenders in the Nevada prison system. |
