| Sheriff says pay the issue as jail braces for guard departures |

Sheriff Robert M. Maciol expects an upswing in departures by corrections officers shortly, but says there’s little he can do about the situation. “We’re going to take a hit in the next couple of of weeks,” he told members of the Board of Legislators’ Public Safety Committee last week when asked about staff vacancies at the county correctional facility. Maciol said several law enforcement agencies are actively recruiting this spring and relatively young corrections officers are attracted to the higher-paying positions. “The issue is leaving for better-paying employment,” declared Maciol during the discussion. He said he wouldn’t be surprised if 10 or more corrections officers quit their county jobs in the short term. Read More. |
